The Woman in the Photograph
A funny thing happens when women see their photographs for the first time.
The woman staring back at them is rarely the woman they expected to see. Instead of the flaws they’ve spent years focusing on, they notice something else entirely. Strength. Warmth. Confidence. Presence. They see a woman who looks capable, beautiful and comfortable in her own skin.
And almost every time, the response is the same.
“Is that really me?”
It is.
The photograph hasn’t changed who they are. It has simply shown them a version of themselves that has been hidden beneath years of self criticism. Most of us spend our lives seeing ourselves from the same angle. The mirror. The hurried selfie. The unflattering photo someone took without warning. We become so familiar with our own reflection that we stop seeing it properly.
Instead, we see a collection of things we would like to change.
The lines around our eyes.
The softness around our middle.
The signs of a life that has been lived.
Somewhere along the way, we forget to notice everything else.
We forget that those lines appeared because of years spent laughing. We forget that our bodies have carried us through challenges, celebrations, heartbreak and joy.
We forget that beauty evolves.
The world is very good at telling women what they should be. Younger. Smaller. Different.
What it rarely tells us is that there is extraordinary beauty in becoming more ourselves.
This is something I witness often during portrait sessions.
Women arrive convinced they are awkward in front of the camera. They tell me they are not photogenic. They apologise before we have even begun. They explain which side they dislike and list the things they hope I can somehow hide.
Then we start.
There is no pressure to perform. No expectation to be anyone other than themselves. As the session unfolds, something shifts.
The nervous laughter settles.
The shoulders relax.
The self consciousness begins to fade.
What emerges is not a different woman. It is the real woman. The one who has spent years taking care of everyone else. The one who has built a life, navigated challenges and collected stories along the way. The one who deserves to take up space.
That is why the vision for Kelliejo Studios has evolved beyond photography alone.
Of course, beautiful images matter. They always will. But this experience is about far more than creating photographs. It is about creating a moment where women can reconnect with themselves. A moment away from responsibilities, expectations and endless to do lists.
A chance to step into a beautifully curated space and simply be. The images we create together are inspired by the elegance and artistry you might find in the pages of a luxury magazine. Soft light. Thoughtful styling. Timeless portraits that feel sophisticated and deeply personal. Not because every woman wants to look like a model. But because every woman deserves to feel celebrated.
There is something incredibly powerful about seeing yourself through someone else’s eyes. A photographer notices things you overlook. The way your eyes sparkle when you talk about something you love. The quiet confidence you carry without realising. The grace that comes from experience. The resilience written into every chapter of your story.
These are the things that make a portrait meaningful.
Not perfection.
Not youth.
Not fitting into a particular mould.
Just you.
Years from now, I believe the photographs we treasure most will not be the ones where we looked perfect. They will be the ones that remind us how we felt. The ones that capture a moment in time. The ones that help us remember who we were. And perhaps that is why photography can be so transformative.
It gives us the opportunity to pause.
To look at ourselves with kindness.
To appreciate the person we have become rather than criticise the person we are not. A different perspective changes everything.
Not because it changes your face. Not because it changes your body. But because it changes the story you have been telling yourself.
The woman in the photograph has been there all along.
Sometimes she simply needs to be seen.
If you are ready to experience portrait photography in a completely different way, Kelliejo Studios offers wellbeing portrait experiences designed to celebrate your story, your strength and the woman you are today.
Not someday.
Not when you feel ready.
Now.
